Dr. Chan mainly performs acupuncture for pain management since he is a pain specialist. In general, the most accepted and studied indication for acupuncture is pain. He uses this alternative / complementary treatment option mainly on pain syndromes to help symptoms caused by, but not limited to, the following problems:
2. How long has Dr. Chan been doing acupuncture?
For over ten years. Dr. Chan has incorporated acupuncture as a complementary and alternative treatment option in his pain management practice since 1998.
3. How many acupuncture / accupuncture sessions are needed?
Usually Dr. Chan requests a series of ten acupuncture / accupuncture sessions to be authorized by insurances (for workers' comp patients or managed care patients, for cash pay patients no authorization is needed). He will perform six acupuncture / accupuncture sessions, followed by a recheck visit, at which time he will evaluate the patient and plan the remaining four sessions.
4. What should I expect during a consultation visit ?
Dr. Chan will first take a detail history and perform a physical exam to determine if you are a good candidate for acupuncture treatment. If he feels that acupuncture can help you, then he ’ll likely recommend an initial trial of 6 visits (2 times per week for 3 weeks) to determine how well it will work.
5. What type of acupuncture needles is used?
The needles are FDA approved stainless steel single use disposable needles which are very thin (close to the diameter of a hair). The needles that Dr. Chan uses in his office are SEIRIN brand which are made in Japan. The type of acupuncture needles is widely considered to be the “Rolls-Royce” of acupuncture needles.
